Try one of These Best Maine Fall Foliage Hikes and Walks...

Maine is the first state to get fall foliage in America up in its North Woods region. But its coastal areas get peak foliage much later. So planning on a hike in Maine to see the best colors is critical.

This selection concentrates on fall foliage walks on the Maine coast because they are more accessible and still provide outstanding leaf peeping opportunities.

But I’ve also included Baxter State Park for those seeking more solitude and willing to commit to more traveling time and overnight camping stops.

Click on any of the links below to get detailed hiking descriptions and directions to each walk.

So let's explore these stunning fall foliage hikes in Maine together...

Saco Bay Trails – Saco, Maine

Within striking distance of metropolitan Boston are Portland and the surrounding countryside of southern Maine. Saco Bay lies just south of Portland and offers a wide diversity of trails. The Saco Bay Trails organization lists 15 trails that traverse beaches, waterfalls, heaths, ocean, ponds, and woodlands. The trials are easy to walk and pass through private land donated for use as trails. If you’re not ready to tackle the Maine wilderness or the peaks of Baxter State Park then these satisfying walks in the fall may just be your “cup of tea.” More >...

Mount Battie - Camden, Maine

Mount Battie’s summit overlooks the picturesque harbor of Camden on a beautiful stretch of Maine’s coastline. The Mt. Battie trail is a moderate climb of about half-mile and 45-minutes of your time and ends at the stone tower on the summit. While the walk may be quick you’ll want to stay and linger over the view, especially during the colorful fall season. Finding the trailhead can be a little difficult and my suggestion is to head straight for the Camden State Park entrance east of Camden village on Route 1. Here you can pick up a free map of all the trails giving directions to each one.

Acadia National Park – Bar Harbor, Maine

One of the most popular parks in the national park system, and anybody that visits Acadia National Park can see why. Gorgeous Maine coastline, the highest point on the east coast, and the only fjord on the U.S. east coast. And not forgetting a hiker's paradise with miles and miles of hikes and walks. Acadia has an extensive carriage road system that’s not only great for bikes but you can walk them, and the 5.5-mile Amphitheater Loop takes you through forests of pines, maples, and birches. Fall is a special time in Acadia and it arrives around first week of October. More >...

Baxter State Park – Millinocket, Maine

If Acadia is the national park jewel in New England then Baxter State Park is surely one of the regions premier wilderness areas. The park has many hikes and trails beautiful anytime of the year but the color in fall can dazzle. Most serious hikers venture up strenuous Mount Katahdin but there are plenty of easier hikes that provide great foliage views. This highland wilderness area has overnight camping and minimal amenities, and can see snow in the fall. A weekend trip for fall hiking is best planned rather than a spur of the moment trip - but the foliage rewards are difficult to rival. More >...

Maine Lodging Resources:

Much of Maine is wilderness and far from soft pillows and beds and so ardent hikers plan and prefer sleeping under the stars or in huts. But even hikers sometimes need a hot shower and prepared food at a restaurant and Maine is home to enough accommodation to fit all budgets and preferences.
