Fall Festival and Country Fairs
in New England

When the August winds blow chilly and cold – sorry Paul Simon – thoughts in New England turn to country fairs and fall festivals. Some of the oldest fairs in the country started in the region, and in this best selection I've included some traditional favorites and a few surprises for you.

Whether you're looking for an Agriculture Fall Festival in rural Vermont...

Or an Applefest in the western hills of Massachusetts...

Or even a Harvestfest near a beach in Maine...

There’s sure to be something to entice you to head out in the crisp autumn air to one of the festivals here.

The largest fall festival in New England is The Big "E" which has its fair grounds in Springfield, Massachusetts. Dates are September 12-September 28, 2008. It's a New England extravaganza with free top name entertainment, major exhibits, The Big E Super Circus, the Avenue of States, dazzling thrill shows, New England history and agriculture, animals, rides, shopping, crafts, a daily parade and a Mardi Gras parade and foods from around the world for 17 glorious days during the most colorful days of fall foliage in New England. Topsfield Fair in Massachusetts on route 1 from exit 50 off route 95, is the nations oldest Agricultural Fair since 1818. Dates are October 3rd thru October 13th, 2008 between 10:00am-10:00pm daily. Events include a fall flower show, wood carving, petting zoo, Antique Farm tractor pulling, amusements rides for kids of all ages, and a Giant Pumpkin Contest – the winner in 2002 set a staggering world record of 1,337.6 pounds!

New Hampshire Canterbury Shaker Village in the Lakes Region is holding their annual Harvest Day on Saturday October 4th, 2008, between the hours of 10:00am – 8:00pm. At this event the Village pays tribute to the gifts of the land. Friendly farm animals, garden tours, old-fashioned games, wagon rides, storytelling, and the music of fiddlers add charm to this festival of abundance. Their famous chicken barbeque and Shaker-style buffet will be available in the North Shop. The village is on route 106 about 20 minutes north of Concord, NH. More >...

The Shelburne Farms Harvest Festival on the shores of Lake Champlain in Vermont is an ideal setting to celebrate the fall foliage traditions of Vermont's farms and forests with musical performances, hay rides, workshops, exhibitions, demonstrations, ethnic and traditional foods, and more for the whole family. Date is Saturday September 20, 2008, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm. More >...

Newport RI is holding its 17th Annual Bowen’s Wharf Seafood Festival on Saturday, October 18 -Sunday October 19, 2008. Bowen’s Wharf is in the harbor area of downtown Newport – just look for all the yachts. The festival offers live entertainment, children's activities, and of course, copious amounts of mouthwatering seafood served by the best seafood restaurants and caterers in the state. More >...

Connecticut's Bethlehem Fair is this September 5-7, 2008. Events include a dairy show, lumberjack competitions, parade, tractor pulls, and lots of live entertainment throughout the three days. Friday starts at 5:00pm, other days 8:00am. The fairgrounds are on route 61. More >...

Vermont State Fair takes place in Rutland, Vermont on August 29 – September 7, 2008. Events include Monster Truck Thunder Drags, culinary arts, circus, amusement rides, and of course dairy shows and judging – well, it wouldn’t be Vermont without a few cows would it. The setting is perfect with the Green Mountain National Forest as a backdrop.

Maine’s blue ribbon classic agriculture fair is Fryeburg Fair being held September 28 – October 5, 2008. Believe me in Maine they know how to hold one of these livestock beauties. Here’s what to expect: Tractor Pulls, Pig Scramble (no idea you’re on your own), Sheep Dog Trials (now you’re talking!), Calf Scrambles (no idea…) and Fireman’s Muster and Grand Parade. There’s a lot more but I’m not going to spoil it for you. More >...

The 132nd Deerfield Fair is one of New Hampshire’s oldest and largest county fairs. Dates this year are September 25 – September 28, 2008 and will be great for fall color. The fair has many traditional agriculture events such as horse pulling, sheep shows, tractor exhibits, along with jugglers, family comedy shows, and barrels of fun for all ages. More >...

Wachusett Mountain in Princeton, Massachusetts is known as the most thrilling of ski slopes in southern New England, but in October it hosts the monster AppleFest for two weekends. In 2008 the dates are October 18-19 and October 25-26. In attendance will be over 60 craft exhibitors, farmers’ market, family side shows, pie-eating contest, pony rides, clowns, and moon bounces. They’ll also be running the chair lift to the summit for peak foliage viewing - definitely worth the trip. More >...

Harvestfest is York in Maine answer to the fall festival challenge, and as the area has some of Maine’s finest beaches the setting on the ocean can’t be beat. Harvestfest has craft and wares, and plenty of sidewalk sales, and its own Kidsfest as well. Dates in 2008 are October 17-19. And just so you know Friday is Chocolate Lover’s Fling night – I’ll let you guess what its about. More >...

New on the New England fall festival scene for 2008 is the Vermont Life Wine & Harvest Festival taking place in the Mount Snow Valley in the Southern Vermont town of Wilmington with additional events occurring in the nearby towns of Dover and Whitingham. The festival will celebrate the best of wine, food and the good life and highlight the unparalleled quality and ingenuity of Vermont producers and artisans. Dates for this event are September 26, 27 and 28th. More >...
