Ogunquit Christmas by the Sea

Ogunquit, Maine is celebrating its 22nd Annual Christmas by the Sea this year and wants you to be there!

The annual Christmas by the Sea festivities has been ongoing almost as long as the town has existed – 28 years. Eh? That’s right, Ogunquit is one of Maine’s newest towns.

Having split from the town of Wells in 1980, Ogunquit is a popular Maine destination for vacationers. You can understand why with its glorious rugged scenic cliff path...

And the 3 1/2 mile white powdery sand Ogunquit Beach, and picturesque Perkins Cove.

But on the weekend of December 12-14, 2008 Ogunquit welcomes those wishing to experience tree decorating, caroling, candlelight walks, concerts, visits with Santa, bonfires, a parade, and… well, a whole bunch more in this jam-packed Yuletide celebration weekend.

Here’s some more details on the events…

Ogunquit Christmas by the Sea – Friday December 12th

It all begins on Friday December 12th at 6:00pm at the Rotary Park, Perkins Cove with the Christmas tree lighting and Caroling event where you can drink hot chocolate and eat cookies. Sort of guaranteed to get you in the swing of the festivities.

A candlelight walk takes you to a concert performed by the Ogunquit Performing Arts, and then on to Ogunquit Square for the town tree lighting ceremony with hot cider and cookies.

The evening finishes with the traditional Bonfire at the Beach event.

Ogunquit Christmas by the Sea – Saturday December 13th

Morning activities start at 9:00am with Hay Rides going through until 3:00pm.

Other morning events include visits with Santa at 9:30am at the Fire Station, Storytelling with Diane Abbot at 11:00am also at the Fire Station, and the beginning of the popular Chowder Tasting Competition at Dunaway Center with music – there’s an $10 admission fee for this event.

At Noon kids can make their own Christmas Decorations downstairs at the Ogunquit. Baptist Church, Shore Road. And between 1:00-4:00 pm there’s Open House at the Ogunquit Heritage Museum at the Winn House, Obed’s Lane.

Throughout the day there’s holiday shopping at Perkins Cove, Shore Road, Main Street and Route one.

In the evening meander your way to the Baptist Church, Shore Road and listen to a concert performed by Melodies and Memories, A Barbershop Quartet.

Ogunquit Christmas by the Sea – Sunday December 14th

Sleep in a little later and have a hearty breakfast before setting out for your final day. Hay Rides continue at 10:00am until 2:00pm. Between 1:00pm – 4:00pm the Open House at the Ogunquit Heritage Museum continues.

The Ogunquit Heritage Museum presents a collection of artifacts that chronicle the history of the town and the surrounding area.

Complete your holiday shopping… or start… at the wonderful Ogunquit locations and specialty shops in the area.

Ogunquit, Maine is about 1 ˝ hours north of the Boston area on Route 1. Take Route 95 North and then Exit 7 towards Route 1 to Ogunquit.
