The Boston Christmas Season has many attractions and shows at Yuletide, but there are three that jump out as popular favorites with residents and visitors alike.
These are designed to get you into the spirit and show a side to Boston missed during the outdoor summer season.
The common thread running through these events is not surprisingly with the time of the year… music.
But whether you like your music with ballet... or in a church...
Or just in a traditional hall... you're bound to find something in the Boston Christmas Season to suit your taste.

Get in Tune with the Boston Pops Christmas Season Here …
A tradition at Symphony Hall for as long as people have memories (who the heck said that?), is holiday music performances by the Boston Pops through December. Conductor Keith Lockhart and guests embark on yet another Christmas season of Boston Pops Holiday Series.It all kicks off on Thursday, December 11th, 2008 at 8:00pm and continue through to the Boston Pops’ annual New Year’s Eve celebration on December 31st at 10:00pm. For the second season the pops season includes kid’s matinée performances. The kid’s matinée performances are specially designed for children and family. These matinée performances include children sing-along, time with Santa and photo opportunities, and a kid-friendly menu and other holiday treats. The Kid’s matinée performances will be on 12/13, 12/14, 12/20, 12/21 and 12/24 - at 11:00am, and 12/18 at 4:00pm. Finally, wringing out the old year on New Year’s Eve is an evening of music, refreshments, and dancing. It all starts at 10:00pm and all you need bring is a desire to celebrate! Tickets for all Boston Pops shows range from $27 - $122. Symphony Hall is located at the Intersection of Massachusetts and Huntington Avenues in Boston’s Back Bay area.
Boston Christmas at Trinity Church
Trinity Church stands proud against the backdrop of John Hancock Tower. On a sunny day the most striking view of the Hancock Tower is the reflection in its glass of Trinity Church.Dedicated in 1877 it’s considered by architectural historians as a masterpiece of American architecture. It draws 100,000 visitors a year, many of whom come for the special performances in the church during the Christmas period. Schedule performances in December usually include Handel’s Messiah and the popular Candlelight Carol sessions usually takes place on a weekend in mid-December. Donations are accepted for all free performances. Trinity Church is located in Copley Plaza in Boston’s Back Bay area. The Green Line “T” stop Copley Square is one block from the church.
Boston Ballet “The Nutcracker”
For U.S. shoppers Christmas starts in earnest the day after Thanksgiving, for everybody else in Boston, it begins with the first performance of Tchaikovsky's “The Nutcracker” by Boston Ballet.A long time tradition and favorite of the Boston Christmas season, this ballet never fails to delight both adults and kids, and has become a staple in the Boston Ballet repertoire. It’s guaranteed to bring in the crowds and help fund the more innovative calendar items for the remainder of their year. It doesn’t matter if you’re a fan of ballet or not, you just got to see this show. And somehow, the ballet company manages to add a few twists and surprises each season so there’s always something new in the show – but still keeping to the wonderful traditional spirit of the story. The Boston Ballet performs The Nutcracker at The Opera House in the downtown area off the Tremont side of Boston Common. The season starts on November 28, 2008 with performances through December 28th. Matinee performances are on most Saturday and Sundays, with evening performances Thursday and Friday. The week before and after Christmas include Wednesday and Thursday evening and some matinee performances. Booking early is an absolute must for this perennial favorite. Ticket prices range from $58-$377 depending on date and performance. Boston is a fun city during the Christmas season. From the large tree on the common to Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, you’ll find plenty of decorations and shops to jingle around and explore. Most attractions in the city are open all winter.
